The only problem was the 5 hour lull without a bite in between.
Headed out of Rudee this morning in good fog, found the fleet on radar just east of the inlet. Started trolling and watched other people catch fish. Finally it happened for us. All six lines go down! There are only 4 of us (including my 7 year old son) so six lines down is a little exciting. Between trying to run the boat, untangling lines, and boating fish it was exciting. Got all six fish and feeling a little too cocky, thinking this would be easy, threw 2 fish back. The two other crew members have never been ocean fishing before so they went nuts over the fish. Anything over 18" was big to them. I figure this is how the day will be and I am stoked. 5 hours later, we get our next hit. I had forgotten what a fish looked like, my son had gone down below to play video games after telling me he was bored (I don't blame him) and my other two crew were asleep. Once again, all six lines come down and we are off to the races. This time we are at CH in about 40' of water. The really exciting part was most of the rods had doubles on. A lot of confusinon, a little yelling, and lots of blood on the deck (mostly from the fish) and we are finished. Threw back all but 4 nice fish between 36" and 43". Best part of the day was my son reeling in two fish on one line all by himself!
Fun day but a lot of time in between action. At least it was a pretty day. I consider myself lucky to have caught what I did though. Without those two whams, we would have skunked and my crew would have realized I have no clue what I am doing. As it is, they think I rock. I will probably never take them again so they keep believing I know what I am doing. Why ruin a good thing?
