I bouth a pair of the Leupold Wind River Compact Series over the winter and have really enjoyed them. I haver used them in the tree stand, duck blind, and fishing in the bay. The compact size easily fit in my dry box that I take everywhere I go and not too big in the tree stand. IMHO Leupold makes good products (I have one of their scopes as well) for the money. The 8X23s where $100.
Got some mid-range Nikon "Action" binocs (8x40) from Cabelas over the winter - very nice for the money (around $70)....lots of light gathering and very clear for the money....I played around with some very expensive binocs while shopping for these and although there is no question these were nice, to my eyes the price differential isn't worth it......and I'd be sick if I dropped or lost them (which i'm quite prone to)
Best of Luck
