I have not had time to fish the James in over a year and was thinking about doing so soon. What is the latest on use of gill nets to catch bait? I know there was quite a stir some time ago about this and believe there was a bunch of folks seeking to outlaw it.

I pulled this info from the 2008 Fishing Regs which I hope is correct:

"Gizzard shad and white perch may also be taken from below the fall line in all tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay using agill net in accordance with Virginia Marine Resources Com-mission recreational fishing regulations."

I believe this means the use of gill nets in the tidal James for gizzards are OK with a VMRC recreational license.
