Hey,

When do most of you guys start white perch fishing? I'm thinking about in the Annapolis area. Are perch a year round fishery or do they migrate for a while. Is there a season on keeping them? Thanks for any help!

It's all weather dependant on water temp. General rule is when the bay water hits 45*.

I had an old timer over in Greensboro tell me many years ago that he will never ever go, no matter what the reports are until St. Patty's day.

Perch in the spring can be picky. When the water starts to warm and the reports start flowing. GO, GO ,GO, and go again. Maybe you'll get them good one day. When they're hot, they're hot.

I can't tell you how many times I have missed them by hours or even sometimes minutes.....

No creel limit or season restrictions . Yes , they can be caught all year long . Without going into any more detail , my hole was clogged up:eek: with ice this morning .:D Bay perch can be found in deep water structure in various locations this time of year . People like Skip and others that fish the bay bridge area can point you in the right direction . Other folks that know of various warm water discharge spots on a few different river areas will be able to help as well . See that guys ? I didn't even mention the "HOT SPOTS" !:D

White Perch follow a seasonal migration.Right now-they are in the deeper waters waiting to spawn. The Choptank near Cambridge is a good place but there are a lot of net boats there.

The deep waters near the bay bridge are good as is the area just inside Eastern Bay.Solomons area above the bridge can be good also.

Look for the deepest water and search with your finder.Perch school up very tightly this time of year.

In Febuary/March- the Perch will move up into shallow creeks and spawn. They tend to stay here until about mid May-then they go into the bay.In June-they will move out to 20-25 feet deep of water. The Perch stay here until late Oct-then slowly move to deeper waters.

Some Perch stay shallow in summer in the creeks/rivers.Each area has it's own hotspot. In spawning creeks- a slightly deeper hole or fallen tree often holds them.

White Perch are a lot of fun.No limit but only take what you can eat.a 12 inch Perch can be 13 years old. They grow slowly once they get to be about 7 inches long.

The base of Conowingo dam can be great in late March-if we do not get a lot of rain.

the magothy and severn get good spring perch runs. or if u have time and boat check the deep portions of the rivers like mentioned. they are a sought species and one of the best in the bay so u have to try until u find them. keep a mental or actual note of where they are. i would hit the bridge rocks if u are in a desperate need but its extremely cold out there for a trial run, if not then wait til spring or the water warms up closer to 50

Mike,

Are you jonesing for some pullage? At this time of year there are very few good shore spots, unless you know of a shore spot within casting distance of a deep hole or one with a nearby warm water discharge. The one place that comes to mind for me is just south of the Nice Bridge on the Potomac. There is a warm water discharge there from a power plant. I hear they catch croaker there in the winter, although I have never fished it myself. I generally give the WP the winter off and stick to catching trout in the stocked lakes.

I'm by no means an expert so feel free to correct me or add your two cents, but I'll catch perch all year long. It seems I'll catch more perch in the summer than I do any other time but they may be because I dont fish nearly as much in the winter. And I love fishing boat houses in the summers with curly tails. I'm not too sure about there patterns b/c I just sort of go out and hope I get lucky.
