I went over the bay bridge today for the first time in a long, long
time. I noticed there is quite a bit of ice in the main channel (eg
in deep water). Why? My logic tells me that the shallower the
water the more ice there should be. Sandy Point launch area
seemed to be nearly ice free.

The strong sun and the early afternoon high tide broke the ice up somewhat. Then the wind blew up from the NW and pushed the ice chunks to the SE. So while the Western shore is relatively clear the ice piles up toward the Eastern side.

About 15 years ago we were fishing the eastern rockpile in late January for Perch.Had an outgoing current and the boat was anchored. The current brought down a huge ice field about 5-6 miles long. There was no way to get through it so I had to run south to the Severn and got around it.Some chunks were pick up truck size.
