Am leaving in a week for a trip to Xcalak. Any recommendations for guides, bonefish flies, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Would love to hear how your trip went. I am heading down to Xcalak on the 14th. I am sure you caught plenty of bones, any luck with the permit.

Chetumal Bay is a pretty good place for bones and permit. There was only one outfitter the last time I went there - principally a dive shop, but well run and well staffed. An American by the name of David ran it then. We did well on bones fishing blonde gotchas size 6 and 4 and small crab flies. There were also good numbers of permit but we got blown off the permit water after the first day (30mph+). The fly they went for was a ******* in size 4. Generally the bones are bigger than at Ascension Bay and the permit more numerous. Fishing pressure, at least a few years ago, was significantly less than Ascension Bay. You should have a great trip if the wind stays down for you.
