I am currently getting use to my Parker 2120 have questions popping up so sorry if I am becoming a pain to some. I am wanting to upgrade my anchor system and was thinking of putting a roller up front and then using it like that for a while to see if putting the money towards a windlass is really necessary. I am trying to make the recovering anchor process easier because it is a pain using the anchor locker and having to pull my backside off with the rode rubbing against the bow of the boat. Has anyone else done this and have comment one way or the other. Your help is always appreciated.

My windlass was down for a while with a bad shaft bearing and I had to pull anchor in by hand. The rode goes through a roller off the pulpit and it was no trouble doing it this way.

Trust me - if you anchor much , buy a windlass. Having one saves your back , makes it safer to pull anchor if choppy and often results in better catches.

Some small wrecks I fish might require 4-5 tries to get just right with anchor. With windlass - no big deal. If had to do by hand - might settle for 3rd try being close enough.

X2- I also have a Parker 2120 with a windlass. If I were to get a bigger boat it may be a Parker, It may have a Yamaha motor BUT FOR SURE it will have a windlass. With the pilot house it takes some time to get up there and you may lose position if you have to do it manually. It is nice to be inside and drop it where you want.

An anchor roller will make recovering your anchor much easier even without a windlass. The windlass, what can I say, it's SWEET! I upgraded mine to one that includes a free-fall (Lewmar Pro 700) and it makes a big difference in getting the anchor down fast when you're over the sweet spot...from the pilot house. Powering down while holding position can be frustrating with wind/seas state.

When selecting your windless be mindful of the type of chain, size rode it takes, and power requirements. A windless is a high Amp piece of gear.

Thanks guys for your responses they are very helpful. CaptWil thanks for your information. It saved me a lot of money in buying the correct chain. I purchased a Lewmar roller for the bow of my boat with a chain lock. 200 ft. of 1/2" three strand nylon rope and 20 ft. of HT G-4 1/4" chain. All of which is compatible with most current windlass units. This is the reason I put this post up. Everyone was very helpfull.
