Got a late start today with Sean and Anthony out of Messick. We got to the ES around 3:00, and made one unsuccessful drift. We repositioned and I must have smacked this fish in the head with the eel, as it started running before my line stopper even pulled tight to the float. Got an instant hookup and it was on. Of course the bearings in my reel decided to **** out at the worst possible time... But after lots of cranking, when the dust settled we had a 45" fish on the deck! Had a super-old deteriorated tag in it too. We made a few more drifts with no joy, then headed back across the bay around 8:30, which wasn't as rough as we thought it would be thankfully. Was a great evening on the water, and I'm happy to check off another first with a big rockfish - it's been a great first year of fishing for me in Virginia! Best of luck when you go!

Pretty work. Next time head to the highrise @ dusk, anchor up & put them eels out to the out @ varying depths & hopefully pull some more. Last year after anchoring dropped the 1st eel on a 49 pound fishes head. Ya never know.

Thanks everyone! Got a call back from US Fish and Game today about the tag. The guy said it was one of the oldest tags he's heard of reported in a while... Didn't say how old, but he mentioned that now the tag #'s are in the 600,000's, and mine was 320,xxx. I'll report back about it when the mail arrives!

Got the tag info today, very cool!! The fish was last caught east of Nantucket island in September of 2000! It was 34.9" then, and was originally tagged in MD. Crazy that it only grew a little more than 10" in over 13 years, and that it had migrated about 700 miles!

What a great back story. It would be very cool to know the history on all of our catches.

The scary part about it is only 10" in 13 years. We all need to be a little more cognizant about releasing those larger fish to continue the hope of bigger fish each year. With the latest craze of 14-17 inch fish, we have a very long time before we see the plethora of 30"+ fish we have been lucky to catch in years past.
