Customers have reported better catches of crabs with traps or trotlines from the BB south on both sides of the bay. Fowl necks and razor clams are the baits of choice along with salted eel on trotlines. A number of "die hard" customer insist that small whole white perch in traps are catching in traps as well.
The DNR has indicated that gobs of small crabs are in the lower part of the bay and headed north - let's hope they are right. Check for moving tides and tide volume. Most crabbers are catching very nice size crabs especially on the eastern shore - 6" to 8" crabs seem to be reported from most folks. If you are willing to drive south a bit and are persistent you can catch enough for a good crab dinner. We did just that on Sunday after July 4th.
On the fishing front - the Susquehanna River is STILL running pretty much a full load making fishing tough for local fishermen. White perch have moved in the river with some rockfish but fishing conditions are tough! We can't remember this much rain and river flow in a long time. On a positive note chumming for Rockfish at Podickery Point, Love Point, Swan Point, Bay Bridge and even around Pooles Island has been good with a nice grade of fish for this time of year. Word has it that nice size Bluefish are showing up as far north as Tilghman for trollers using hoses and spoons - those fishermen who love smoked Bluefish might want to take note. Check the DNR website for weekly updates.
Remember Harford Crabbing and Tackle provides plenty of chum, bunker, live eels, night crawlers, squid, fowl necks, RAZOR CLAMS (by order), and more. Kim has recently added FRESH LOCAL PRODUCE to the store's offering including local SWEET CORN, MELONS, and TOMATOES. We steamed our crabs WITH sweet corn covered with Harbor Spice crab seasoning this past weekend - doesn't get much better than that!:thumbup::thumbup:
